You've met Moose. You've met Harley. You've met Jed.

Now meet the one who was here before all of them.

Meet Peach.

Peach is a Pug. She arrived in early 2017 as a rehomer — we were told she was about eighteen months old, which makes her somewhere around ten or eleven now. She arrived unannounced. Deb brought her home and asked Ruby — nine years old at the time — to go and get something from the back of the car.

That something was Peach.

Ruby and Peach. Inseparable from the start.
Ruby and Peach. Inseparable from the start.

Every little girl's dream. With a heavy dose of Gallimore responsibility attached, because that's how things work in this house.

Ruby has been responsible for Peach from that day to this. No exceptions.

The Eye

At some point Peach developed an abscess in her eye. The treatment was eye drops every four hours — day and night — to save it.

Ruby set her alarm.

Ruby made an ice box to keep the drops at the right temperature.

Ruby did not miss a single dose.

Not mum. Ruby. Twelve years old, alarm going off through the night, making sure her dog got what she needed.

The eye was saved. Of course it was. Ruby was on the case.

What Peach Does

Where do we even begin.

Peach has ridden in the back of a truck full of hay. She was not asked. She simply got in and made herself comfortable because obviously that's where she was going.

Peach has ridden on horseback with Ruby. On the horse. That happened.

Ruby taught Peach to skateboard. We will not elaborate further. It happened and it was magnificent.

Peach has accompanied Ruby everywhere — through the village, around the surrounding area, to the farm, to the fields. She was a familiar face long before Jed or Junior arrived. She was there first and she has never forgotten it.

Peach lives with goats, horses, Leonbergers, a Rottweiler and a Yakutian Laika. She finds all of them perfectly manageable and has never once adjusted her behaviour to accommodate any of them. Two large dogs have a disagreement over a dropped treat? It's Peach's treat now. A vehicle dares to come down the lane? Peach will see to it. An anvil needs standing on? Peach is already on it.

She has been found asleep sandwiched between Leonbergers, having apparently decided their combined body heat was exactly what she needed and that they would simply have to manage.

They managed.

A Superfit Pug

We should mention — because it matters — that Peach has always been a remarkably healthy Pug. Unlike many of her breed, she has always had a slightly bigger nose, which means she has never struggled to breathe. She has exercised well, moved freely and lived fully.

The Pug breed standard says they are a lot in a little.

Peach has read this and agreed completely.

PC Peach — Retirement

Peach is officially a senior citizen. She has developed her selective deafness to a fine art. She has earned it and we respect it entirely.

However.

Retirement has not dimmed her sense of purpose. When she is awake everything is still her business — big, small, nothing to do with her whatsoever. She remains across all of it.

The only new challenge is that she occasionally has an idea about going for a long walk entirely on her own and without telling anyone. Meg and Ruby have been known to sprint after her when the rest of the Dud Dogs department has provided sufficient distraction.

She is not sorry. She never is.

Ruby and Peach

There is a photograph of Ruby at about nine years old, holding Peach in her arms — Peach asleep, completely at peace, Ruby looking at her with the quiet certainty of someone who knows exactly what they have.

That photograph is the whole story.

A little girl who got a dog and took her responsibility completely seriously. Who set her alarm in the night and made an ice box and saved her dog's eye. Who took Peach everywhere, taught her to skateboard, let her ride horses and trucks and hay bales and never, not once, treated her as anything less than the most important small creature in the world.

Peach came to us as a rehomer. She has no idea.

As far as Peach is concerned she has always been exactly where she was supposed to be.

She's right.
