If you've been following the Dud Dogs you'll already know Moose — Chief of Security, professional counter leaner, theoretical intimidator. And Harley — 75kg of emotional support with no brakes and absolutely no concept of personal space.
Now meet Jed.

Jed is a Yakutian Laika. If you've never heard of one, you're not alone — this is an ancient Russian sled dog breed, one of the oldest working breeds in existence, built for the Arctic and utterly magnificent for it. The Yakutian Laika Club of Great Britain have been working hard to gain breed recognition here in the UK and we are very much watching that space. These dogs deserve to be known. Jed is living proof of that.
He is two years old. He is fluffy beyond reason. He has the bearing of a Russian prince who has graciously agreed to spend some time in Shropshire and is finding it adequate.
He belongs to Ruby. He knows it. Everyone knows it.
The Ruby Problem
Here is the thing about Jed. He is a perfectly pleasant, sociable, adaptable dog — paddleboarder, horse companion, camper, cow dog, prom attendee — who is happy to go anywhere and do anything.
As long as Ruby is there.

Let Ruby leave the house and things change. We can let Jed out and he will bound down the garden with enormous enthusiasm and great purpose — and then stop. Dead. Swivel his head. Scan the horizon.
No Ruby.
The return journey is considerably less enthusiastic. He comes back up the garden thoroughly disappointed in all of us and goes to find somewhere quiet to wait.
He is not rude about it. He is just very clear.
Ruby is his person. The rest of us are tolerated. We appreciate that.
What Jed Does
Where do we start.
Jed paddleboards with Ruby — on the board, completely unbothered, Arctic dog on a Shropshire river looking like he's done this a thousand times. Getting IN the water is another matter entirely. He will travel by vessel. He will not get wet. Standards must be maintained.
Jed goes to work. Ruby milks cows and Jed goes with her — sitting on the farm quad beside Trevor, the farm's own collie, like a complete professional. Trevor, who has his own farm to run and absolutely no time for nonsense, nonetheless showed Jed the ropes. Jed was an excellent student. Between them they have the whole operation covered.
Jed companions the horses. Nose to nose with Junior like old friends. He moves around them with a quiet confidence that speaks to centuries of working alongside large animals in the Russian wilderness. He knows what he's about.
Jed camps. He has shared a tent with Peach — Ruby's rescue Pug, officially designated PC Peach on account of everything being her business. Big situations, small situations, other people's situations — Peach is across all of them. She is officially a senior citizen and has absolutely no idea, no fear and no interest in being told what to do. Jed found the whole camping arrangement perfectly acceptable. Peach had opinions about everything. Jed did not engage with them.
Jed attended Ruby's prom. Not the actual prom — he was there for the photo shoot, resplendent in a bow tie, taking his role as official escort very seriously. Ruby then rode Junior up the drive of Walcott Hall to arrive at the actual event because of course she did. She is a Gallimore.
Jed was babysat by Harley as a puppy. Harley took this responsibility seriously. A Note From Ruby
Ruby would like it on record that she is most put out that Jed was not the first Dud Dog.
The company is named after her. The dog is hers. Moose got there first.
We understand her frustration. We have no adequate explanation.
The Breed

The Yakutian Laika is one of the oldest dog breeds in existence — an ancient Arctic working breed from the Yakutia region of Russia, bred for sledding, hunting and reindeer herding in some of the most extreme conditions on earth. Versatile, intelligent, loyal and utterly beautiful.
Today the Kennel Club of Great Britain officially recognised the Yakutian Laika as a breed. It has been a long time coming and the Yakutian Laika Club UK have worked tirelessly to make it happen. We are very proud to be marking this day with Jed's blog and tee launch — and very grateful to Kate and the club for their support and blessing.
